Boxer Milner Tjampitjin

Boxer Milner Tjampitjin was was a senior Jaru man from Matwanangu near Sturt Creek in the Kimberley. Although working through Warlayirti Artists (Balgo), he painted Jaru Country, distinct from the Walmajarri focus of many Balgo artists. His paintings centred on the powerful waters of Sturt Creek (Kurrun), the floodplains of Purkiji, and Walyarra, capturing the dramatic monsoonal cycles that feed Paruku (Lake Gregory). Known for his lyrical handling of paint, Boxer developed a highly individual palette of subtle tonal shifts—multiple blues, purples, yellows, and whites—reflecting the shifting soils, vegetation and water of his homelands.
His work featured in major national and international exhibitions, including Images of Power (National Gallery of Victoria, 1993), Our Land, Our Body, Our Spirit (Hanoi & Ho Chi Minh City, 1995), Balgo: Bold Colour From the Great Sandy Desert (Araluen Arts Centre, 2000), and the landmark Paruku Project presentations. Boxer Milner died in 2009, leaving a legacy of quiet innovation and profound Country-based knowledge.
