Doreen Reid Nakamarra

Doreen Reid Nakamarra was a celebrated Ngaanyatjarra artist whose vibrant paintings of Kiwirrkurra country achieved remarkable national and international acclaim during her brief but meteoric career. Born east of Warburton Mission, Nakamarra's family lived traditionally before transitioning to the mission, then walking hundreds of miles north to Papunya in the early 1960s. After marrying traditional man George Tjampu Tjapaltjarri, she moved to Kiwirrkurra, initially assisting with his painting backgrounds. Beginning her own practice in 1999, Nakamarra was emboldened when Tjampu, before his 2005 death, insisted she paint Kiwirrkurra country rather than her ancestral southern lands—driven by her desire "for white fellas to see that country like I do." Her finest works featured vibrating chevrons interspersed with fine dotting, evoking shimmering sandhills in desert heat. Nakamarra won the General Painting Award at the National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award (2008) and exhibited at major venues including the National Gallery of Australia's "Culture Warriors" (2007), Sydney Biennale (2008), and posthumously at documenta 13, Kassel (2012). Her tragic death in 2009 cut short one of Australia's most successful contemporary Indigenous art careers.
