Dorothy Napangardi

Dorothy Napangardi was a distinguished Warlpiri artist whose intricate, stylistically distinct paintings presented her ancestral Mina Mina country through interconnected networks of dotted lines. Born in the Tanami Desert, Napangardi's practice expanded upon traditional Kurawarri (Dreaming) designs, depicting land both topographically and through ancestral tracks and their associated stories. Her sophisticated linear compositions conveyed the spiritual and physical dimensions of country with remarkable precision and beauty. Napangardi's work achieved significant recognition through major solo exhibitions including "Dancing Up Country" at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (2002-03, touring), alongside shows at galleries in San Francisco, Brisbane, and Melbourne. Her paintings featured in important group exhibitions including the 18th Biennale of Sydney "All Our Relations" (2012) and "Ancestral Modern" at Seattle Art Museum (2012). Her works are held in prestigious collections including the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, and internationally at the Linden Museum, Stuttgart and LeWitt Collection, United States. Napangardi's legacy lies in her masterful translation of Warlpiri cosmology into contemporary painting with distinctive visual language that commands international recognition.
