Jackie Giles Tjapaltjarri was a distinguished Pintupi artist, Maparnjarra (traditional healer), and cultural leader whose paintings documented intricate Tjukurrpa networks and Tingari ancestral journeys across the Gibson Desert. Living traditionally in the Gibson Desert before visiting Warburton Mission in Western Australia, Giles traveled extensively throughout his life, his knowledge and authority widely respected across the Western Desert and beyond. A fundamental cornerstone of Papunya Tula Artists during his years painting at Kintore, Giles later became a founding member of Kayili Artists, a community-owned enterprise in Patjarr (Karilwara). His paintings depicted the creative journeys of Tingari—ancestral men and women—and the complex sacred geography of his country with deep ceremonial authority. As both healer and artist, Giles brought profound traditional knowledge to his practice, creating works that balanced cultural protocol with contemporary artistic expression. His dual roles as Maparnjarra and painter reflected the integral connection between healing, ceremony, and visual storytelling in Western Desert culture. Giles's legacy extends through both his artistic contributions to the Papunya Tula and Kayili Artists movements and his enduring influence as a respected elder and knowledge keeper until his passing in 2010.
