Jan Billycan

Jan Billycan (Djan Nanudie) was a prominent Yulparija artist from Bidyadanga whose vibrant paintings celebrated the jila (living water), tali (sand dunes), and sacred sites of her Ilyarra country in Western Australia's Great Sandy Desert. Growing up walking her country with her parents, Billycan knew intimately the living waters including Karrparti, Kawarrr, Jurntiwa, and Wirrguj, where quiet snakes could be sung down and travel to bring rain. Her paintings depicted this "big dog country" with bold colors and dynamic compositions that conveyed deep spiritual connection to place. Billycan held solo exhibitions at William Mora Galleries, Melbourne (2007, 2009) and Short St Gallery, Broome, achieving significant recognition including winning Most Outstanding Work at the Hedland Art Awards (2010) and Western Australian Artist at the West Australian Indigenous Art Award (2011). Her work featured in major exhibitions including "Culture Warriors" National Indigenous Art Triennial (National Gallery of Australia, 2007), the Canning Stock Route Project exhibitions internationally, and toured to Europe and the United States. Her works are held in prestigious collections including the National Gallery of Australia, Queensland Art Gallery, National Gallery of Victoria, and internationally, establishing her legacy within contemporary Australian Indigenous art.
