Kathleen Petyarre was a distinguished Anmatyerr artist whose innovative layered paintings established her as one of Australia's most significant contemporary artists. Born at Atnangkere, northwest of Utopia station in Central Australia, Kathleen began creating artwork in 1977 through batik production alongside other Utopia women. In April 1989, she participated in the groundbreaking exhibition "A Summer Project" at S.H. Ervin Gallery, Sydney, where she debuted paintings on board supplied by CAAMA. Transitioning to acrylic on canvas, Kathleen gradually refined her signature style of layering fine dots in thin acrylic paint, creating works of remarkable depth and complexity that transcended cultural boundaries. Her paintings achieved extraordinary international recognition, with her work held in prestigious collections including the Kelton Foundation, Seattle Art Museum, Levi-Kaplan Collection at Harvard University, and the Kluge-Ruhe Collection at University of Virginia. In 1996, she received the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award, followed by the Islander Art Award in 1997. Kathleen won the Visy Pacific Art Prize in 1998, and the People's Choice Award at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney. Her achievements culminated in 2001 when Genius of Place was published with a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, solidifying her status as Australia's most celebrated female Aboriginal artist. Kathleen Petyarre passed away in Alice Springs on November 24, 2018, leaving a profound legacy in Australian contemporary art.
