Mantua Nangala

A senior Pintupi artist based in Kiwirrkura, Mantua Nangala is a leading painter of the Western Desert movement and a key figure within Papunya Tula Artists. Her works evoke the undulating tali (sand dunes) of her ancestral Country through intricate fields of rhythmic dots that shimmer with light and motion. Rooted in her deep cultural lineage, Nangala’s practice honours the Marrapinti Tjukurrpa, women’s stories passed through generations, while extending the legacy of her father, Anatjari Tjampitjinpa, one of the founding Papunya Tula painters. Her meditative process transforms desert knowledge into contemporary abstraction, inviting viewers into an experience of stillness, reverence, and connection to place. Nangala’s monumental canvases have been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at the National Gallery of Australia’s Ceremony Triennial.
