A senior Pintupi artist and revered Elder based in Kintore, Naata Nungurrayi is among the most influential women to emerge from the Western Desert painting movement. Born near Pollock Hills in Western Australia, she lived traditionally before joining Papunya Tula Artists in 1996, following years of assisting male relatives in early desert painting practices. Her works, distinguished by radiating fields of ochre, white and rose tones, map the shifting sandhills, rockholes and ceremonial sites of her ancestral Country. Through her depictions of the Tingari women’s journeys and the sacred site of Marrapinti, Nungurrayi extends a visual lineage of cultural memory and spiritual geography. Her paintings are held in major public collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of New South Wales, National Gallery of Victoria, and Aboriginal Art Museum Utrecht, affirming her status as one of the preeminent painters of the Western Desert.
