Pepai Jangala Carroll

Pepai Jangala Carroll was a revered Pitjantjatjara elder whose artistic career began not with paint, but with clay. After joining the Ernabella Arts studio in 2009, he quickly distinguished himself as one of the region’s most accomplished ceramicists, using hand-built forms to map the deep contours of his father’s Country near Kintore. His early ceramic vessels, layered with fine linear markings and powerful references to Tjukurpa, gained swift institutional attention and established him as a leading figure in the growing field of Indigenous ceramics.

As his practice evolved, Carroll increasingly turned to painting, finding in the flat plane a new way to evoke memory, inherited knowledge and the emotional pull of Walungurru. His paintings and ceramics are now held in major national collections, including the National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of South Australia, Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Araluen Collection and ArtBank. A finalist in multiple national awards, Carroll was honoured in 2021 as the first Indigenous artist featured in the JamFactory ICON series, cementing his legacy as a pivotal cultural leader and artistic innovator.
