Peter Marralwanga

Peter Marralwanga was a leading Kunwinjku painter and ceremonial leader whose work helped shape the trajectory of Western Arnhem Land bark painting in the late twentieth century. Based for most of his life at Marrkolidjban outstation, he briefly moved to Maningrida in the 1960s to advocate for recognition of his homeland, before returning to live and work on Country. Under the mentorship of his close friend Yirawala, Marralwanga began painting in the early 1970s, translating deep ritual knowledge into highly charged barks.

He became a key innovator of rarrk (cross-hatching) derived from Mardayin body designs, using shifting grids of line and colour to animate powerful ancestral beings such as Luma Luma, Mimi spirits, Yawk Yawk and Ngalyod, the Rainbow Serpent. A crucial mentor to artists including John Mawurndjul, Ivan Namirrkki and Samuel Namunjdja, Marralwanga bridged rock art traditions and contemporary practice.
