Rammey Ramsey

Rammey Ramsey, a senior Gija man of the Jungurra skin, was born on Old Greenvale Station and grew up moving through the rugged gorge country surrounding Elgee Cliffs, the heart of his ancestral lands. After a childhood spent walking bush routes with family, he worked as a stockman across Bedford Downs, Lansdowne and Bow River Stations before settling permanently at Bow River. His painting career began in 2000 with Jirrawun Arts, where his powerful, distilled visions of country quickly drew attention. Solo and group exhibitions in Melbourne and Darwin soon followed, as well as his key role in the Bedford Downs massacre Joonba performed at the Telstra Awards and later with the Neminuwarlin Performance Group.

Ramsey painted only the country he had inherited rights to, rendering rock escarpments, wallaby habitats, waterholes and stock routes with clarity, warmth and emotional resonance. Later working through Warmun Art Centre, he continued to transform Gija law, memory and deep compassion into a distinctive painterly language rooted in place.
