Sonia Kurarra is a senior painter from Yungngora (Noonkanbah) whose practice is deeply rooted in the life of the Fitzroy River and its surrounding billabongs. Raised along the riverbanks, she learned early on to shape stories through art, helping to teach children how to paint, dance and understand the ancestral water-snake Nangurra, whose presence defines the country around the Sandy Billabong. Working through Mangkaja Arts since the early 1990s, she first developed her bold visual language on paper before moving decisively onto canvas, where her distinctive energy and rhythm quickly set her apart. Kurarra’s paintings pulse with the abundance of her home- shoals of fish, rocky cooking places, coolamons and boomerangs all appear in swirling compositions that echo the movement of floodwaters receding into quiet pools. Her breakout solo exhibition in 2009 marked the arrival of a major contemporary voice, and she has since become one of Mangkaja’s most celebrated artists, known for transforming everyday river stories into dynamic, immersive works of art.
