Tim Leura Tjapaltjarri

Tim Leura Tjapaltjarri was a pioneering figure of the early Papunya painting movement, grounded in his Anmatyerr Country around Napperby Creek, northwest of Mparntwe/Alice Springs. Before turning to acrylics, he was widely admired as an exceptional woodcarver and stockman, bringing to painting a finely honed sense of form and atmosphere. After relocating to Papunya in the late 1950s with his wife, Daisy Leura Nakamarra, he became one of the community’s foundational artists, forging a close working relationship with Geoffrey Bardon and encouraging his younger brother, Clifford Possum, to join the emerging collective.

Tjapaltjarri’s paintings are marked by a contemplative tonal range and an interest in nocturnal light, often drawing on his deep knowledge of sites associated with possum, yam, fire, lizard, sun, moon and Morning Star Tjukurrpa. Though his career was prematurely cut short, his practice was rooted in memory, place, and cultural inheritance continues to shape Western Desert painting and is recognised for its quiet authority and aesthetic refinement.
