Tommy Mitchell

c. 1943 - 2013 Western Desert
Tommy Mitchell was a Ngaanyatjarra artist whose Country encompasses Ngaturn and Walu in Western Australia's Great Central Road region. Born near Papulankutja, Mitchell was a Karimarra skin man who lived at Warakurna with his family. He began painting with Warakurna Artists in mid-2005 and rapidly emerged as one of the art centre's senior artists.
Mitchell's paintings depicted tjukurrpa from his father's and mother's Country, drawing on stories from his childhood travels through tali country with his family. His work explored themes including Walu Tjukurrpa, Nganturn Tingari Wati, Nganturn Tali Country, and Toyota Dreaming, reflecting both traditional knowledge and contemporary desert life.
A senior law man instrumental in traditional ceremony, Mitchell was deeply committed to passing on tjukurrpa knowledge to his family. Beyond painting, he was an accomplished carver of traditional weapons and participated in significant cultural projects, including Tjukuri, a traditional dance and song project performed at the 2007 Perth International Arts Festival.
