Turkey Tolson Tjupurrula

Turkey Tolson Tjupurrula emerged in the early 1970s as part of a younger generation of Pintupi artists shaped by the groundbreaking developments at Papunya. After watching senior men paint, including figures such as Mick Namarari Tjapaltjarri, he began his own practice in 1973, quickly gaining recognition for both his artistic skill and his ability to bridge cultural worlds through his English fluency and quiet authority. Born near Ikuntji after his family’s journey east from the Gibson Desert, Tolson spent his youth learning desert lifeways before moving between Papunya and the outstations that anchored him to ancestral country.

His painting evolved steadily: early works followed established conventions, while later canvases expanded into refined fields of circles and rhythmic dotted bands. By the 1990s he was known for a striking minimalism exemplified by his celebrated Straightening the Spears series. As long-serving chair of Papunya Tula Artists, Tolson played an essential role in guiding the company and representing artists during a transformative era for Western Desert art.
