Wukun Wanambi

Wukun Wanambi emerged in the late 1990s as one of Eastern Arnhem Land’s most compelling contemporary voices, building on the legacy of his father, the respected painter and leader Mithili Wanambi. Although his father died before he could formally apprentice under him, Wukun was entrusted with the sacred saltwater designs of the Marrakulu through senior Djunggayi, ensuring the continuation of imagery that had lain dormant since 1981. His early barks reveal a refined command of line and rhythm, while later works expand this language onto repurposed metals, sparking a new approach to etching at Yirrkala.

Awarded the Best Bark Painting at the 1998 NATSIAA for his first Saltwater Project work, Wanambi went on to build a distinguished national and international career. A leader within Buku-Larrŋgay and The Mulka Project, he has contributed to major public commissions, films, and cultural initiatives, all while mentoring younger Yolŋu artists and sustaining an active role in community life.
