The site of Jack Flood is a recurring subject across Paddy Bedford’s paintings. Garnkoorlbany, its Gija name, lies in the northern part of his father’s country. Its name translates to the place of a wattle tree that is used to poison fish. The branches of this tree hold many curly seeds when swished through the water give the effect like soap, the fish rise, gasping to the surface, making them an easy target.

The deep black areas representing the fertile earth almost consumes the canvas however, the tension of the top and bottom compositions hold it in balance. The bottom left roundel is an early hint to the rounded shapes that hug the edges of the canvas, a signature motif of Paddy Bedford's work from about 2000.
