REGGIE ULURU

D’Lan Contemporary is proud to present a collection of recent works by Reggie Uluru, a senior Traditional Owner of Uluru in the Northern Territory of Australia. Reggie’s unique paintings trace the journey of Wati Ngintaka, the Perentie Lizard Man, as he travels west, pursued by the rightful owners of a stolen grindstone. This exhibition—Reggie’s first international presentation—coincides with the 40th anniversary of the hand back of Uluru to its traditional owners by the Australian Federal Government, a landmark event in the recognition of Indigenous land rights.

Reggie Uluru

Reggie Uluru is a senior Anangu Elder, respected songman and Traditional Owner from Mutitjulu, at the base of Uluru. A custodian of the Wati Ngintaka Tjukurpa, he carries forward the ancestral narrative of the Perentie Lizard with great authority, painting the story passed to him by his father, the renowned Paddy Uluru. For decades, Reggie guided visitors through his Country, sharing cultural knowledge and advocating for its protection; he was present at the historic 1985 handback of Ululu to its Traditional Owners. Painting later in life through Walkatjara Art, he brings to canvas the rhythms of ceremony, working in sync with the songs he has performed since youth. His work has been shown internationally with a work housed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and he received the People’s Choice Award at the King & Wood Mallesons First Nations Art Award in 2023. Today, Reggie is recognised as one of the most significant cultural voices connected to Ululu.
