Luke Scholes + Vanessa Merlino Discuss New Collaboration With Timothy Cook + Jilamara Arts
In May 2024, D’Lan Contemporary Director Luke Scholes and Head of Research, Vanessa Merlino travelled to Milikapiti on Melville Island to spend time with Timothy Cook and Jilamara Arts & Crafts Managers, Hannah Raisin and Will Heathcote.
The purpose of the visit was to explore a collaboration between D’Lan Contemporary, Timothy, and Jilamara Arts, which resulted in an exciting new exhibition that will be presented across two venues in Melbourne this month – at Melbourne Art Fair and at our Exhibition Street gallery. Japarra amantiya Japilinga: Moon and Stars will feature recent paintings by Timothy on bark and linen, and carved tutuni poles which will be displayed at the Fair, while a curated selection of Timothy’s earlier works will be displayed in dialogue with historical works by some of the Tiwi Islands most revered artists, will be on view at our Exhibition Street gallery.
Luke and Vanessa were fortunate to spend time with Timothy whilst in Milikapiti, and to see some of his new works in progress. They share insights into their experience here in this video, which we hope you enjoy.
